Our Mission
Most homeowners do not need to start with a full design package. They need to know whether the idea makes sense first.
Before You Build NJ gives homeowners a lower-cost first step by reviewing zoning rules, property constraints, and obvious red flags before they commit to surveys, architects, contractors, or permit drawings.
I created Before You Build NJ because I have seen too many homeowners get excited about a project before anyone checks the rules.
With nearly 10 years of architectural experience, including about 6 years in residential work, I have reviewed hundreds of zoning situations involving additions, garages, decks, pools, accessory structures, lot coverage, setbacks, and nonconforming properties.
My role is to help homeowners get clear before they spend big. I review available zoning information, public records, tax maps, and client-provided documents to explain what appears possible, what may be restricted, and what professionals or approvals may be needed next.
Think of it as the step before the step: practical zoning guidance before you dive into surveys, architectural drawings, contractor pricing, or permit submissions.
I've been asked countless time to help friends and family in determining if the improvements they wanted to do to their property is possible. I found that I really enjoyed researching, finding answers and being a valuable resource. It took me years of being away from residential architecture & zoning that I realized how much I enjoy it.
